JHB Annual Report
Period of review: February 2018–10January 2019
    JOHANNESBURG COMMITTEE CHAIRPERSON’S STATEMENT
  1. We have reached the end of our full year of operation. As committee members, we resumed our duties from February 2018 till January 2019. We are proud to report our year of exceptional performance with regard to the following:
  2. MEMBERSHIP
  3. NEC and E2 Solutions keep and update the data base of how many SAOSWA members paid the annual membership and training event attendance fees for 2018. In the association we have 69 people who are paid up members.
  4. There are three types of membership:
    1. Ordinary members: Registered Social Workers with the SACSSP.
    2. Associate members: Any persons registered as auxiliary social workers or student social workers who are registered with the SACSSP.
    3. Honorary members: Members who have been identified based on their contribution towards Occupational Social Work. Two members are in the process to be awarded honorary membership, namely Prof (Ref) Adrian du P van Breda and Dr Angela du Plessis.
    PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS
  5. Four training events were successfully carried out during 2018 which include the following:
    1. A Model for Specialist Occupational Social Work in Organizations, and Requirements for Specialist Registration with Council. This topic was presented by Prof. Rev Adrian D Van Breda (Professor of Social Work, Faculty of Humanities, University of Johannesburg) and Jenny Dry (Director, Institute for Balanced Living, Vice Chairperson of SAOSWA NEC). The training event took place on 28 March 2018. It was attended by 28 members and 4 CPD were awarded by the SACSSP.
    2. Risky Business: Interventions to address Substance Abuse Disorders in the Workplace for Professionals. This topic was presented by Adrie Vermeulen. The training event took place on 27th June 2018. It was attended by 21 members and 3 CPD points were awarded by the SACSSP.
    3. An Introduction to Mindfulness: An experiential session, tailored specifically for SAOSWA as part of annual Professional Self-care initiative in August. This topic was presented by Nuño Aguirre De Cárcer Girón (Lecturer at University of the Witwatersrand and Mindfulness Instructor in the Corporate and Private Sector). The training event took place on 29th August 2018. It was attended by 24 members and 3 CPD points were allocated by the SACSSP.
    4. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Anxiety States: What Occupational Social Workers need to know? This topic was be presented by Dr Jan Chabalala (Head Psychiatrist at 1 Military Hospital). The training event took place on the 31st of October 2018. It was attended by 46 members and 3,5 CPD points were awarded by the SACSSP.

  8. WEBSITE
  9. Members were requested and encouraged to log onto the SAOSWA website in order to obtain updates of the past, current and upcoming events with regard to SAOSWA matters as well as SACSSP matters. Logging onto the web-site also enables them to print their CPD Certificates and have access to presentations. Members were also encouraged to interact on the Facebook page that was started by one of the NEC Committee members.
  10. GOVERNANCE OF THE ASSOCIATION
  11. The JHB Branch executive committee was elected in 2017. The members have served with commitment and dedication to date. There are newly elected members to the JHB branch committee. The committee members have served on the committee on a voluntary basis. On the 10th of January 2019 the committee welcomed a new member to the committee and new roles and responsibilities were assigned. The new chairperson, Lydia Mmola, took over the responsibility of chair on this specific day.
  12. The committee was assigned and encouraged to take full responsibilities for all aspects linked to their portfolios. Committee meetings took place at different venues stipulated below:
    1. 31 January 2018- Nedbank Building
    2. 25 April 2018- E2 Solutions
    3. 25 July 2018- E2 Solutions
    4. 05 December 2018- E2 Solutions

  28. CHALLENGES FOR 2018
  29. The number of CPD points allocated by the SACSSP did not match the quality and effort invested in order to receive the deserving points. An appeal was lodged. However, we did not always get a positive outcome.
  30. Members did not RSVP in order to indicate whether they are attending the training events. This has a negative impact on the refreshments of the day as well as the size of the venue.
  31. Members arrive late for training events and leave early.
  32. Some members attend the training events but do not pay either the annual fees or training event fees.
  33. The venue at Nedbank had to be changed to Wits due to booking challenges.
  34. There is no stable caterer as a result the responsible member struggles with collection of food and pricing.
  35. No whatsapp group exists for convenient communication.
  36. No name tags exist to identify attendees of the event and establish networking.
  37. SUCCESSES FOR 2018
  38. JHB branch of SAOSWA had four successful training events and they were well attended, with increasing number of members.
  39. Social Workers of the Mining Sector and Department of Health had joined the Association and this has broadened the database of the JHB branch. Two members from the mining sector have also volunteered to be part of the in-coming committee.
  40. A Facebook page was created for SAOSWA at large.
  41. The committee managed to spend money within the allocated budget.
  42. CPD points were allocated for all the training events from 2017 to date.
  43. Some of the committee members had the opportunity to attend the NEC meetings and new members joined the JHB executive committee..
  44. More members adhered to training event payments.
  45. Topics for events were focused on Occupational Social Work.
  46. THANKS AND APPRECIATIONS
  47. As the incoming Chairperson of the JHB management committee. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the outgoing chairperson for her trust and support in me to carry on the baton, for the success of the committee and its dedication to the work . ahead. I am looking forward to a good working relationship with all committee members who have already shown their support and dedication. I encourage the effective flow of activities in their respective portfolios throughout our serving term as the JHB committee.
  48. As the JHB committee we appreciate the fruitful year of 2018 and encourage all SAOSWA members to continue supporting all events planned with extra care for their specific needs, benefit and growth.

  4. There are three types of membership, however, Pretoria SAOASWA branch has mainly two:
    1. Ordinary members: registered Social Workers with the SACSSP.
    2. Associate members: any persons registered as auxiliary social workers or student social workers who are registered with the SACSSP.
  5. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS
  6. Four training events were successfully carried out during 2018 which include the following:
    1. Health Care Professional Ethical Practice within a Multi-Cultural Setting: This topic was presented by Dr Andre Pretorius. The training event took place on 14th March 2018.It was attended by 60 members and 3 CPD were awarded by the SACSSP.
    2. Managing Mentally ill Patients: A Social Work Perspective: This topic was presented by Dr J. Chabalala. The training event took place on 20th June 2018. It was attended by 72 members and 4 CPD points were awarded by the SACSSP.
    3. Personality Disorders: This topic was presented by Dr J. Chabalala. The training event took place on 22th August 2018. It was attended by 65 members: still awaiting CPD allocation by the SACSSP.
    4. Occupational Social Work Wellness: Work Related Stress, Risk Factors of Burnout and Self Care: This topic was be presented by Lt Col S.S. Monareng. The training event took place on the 24th of October 2018. It was attended by 49 members and 3,5 CPD points were awarded.

  33. It has been a challenge to obtain the outstanding 2016 CPD points from the SACSSP and the previous committee. This has not been resolved to date.
  34. Members did not RSVP in order to indicate whether they are attending the training events. This has a negative impact on the refreshments of the day.
  35. Members arrive late for training events and leave early.
  36. Some members attend the training events but do not pay either the annual fees or training event fees.

  38. Pretoria branch of SAOSWA had four successful training events and they were well attended..
  39. Social Workers of Correctional Services had joined the association and this has broadened the database of the Pretoria branch. They have also volunteered to be part of the in-coming committee..
  40. The Pretoria Branch bought the lipro to ensure that our training event runs smoothly. This will be handed over to the new committee with the safe keeping procedure rule and regulations..
  41. We also created a Facebook page for SAOSWA at large..
  42. The committee managed to spend money within the allocated budget.
  43. Despite the fact that we received fewer CPD points for the training events, we got CPD for all the training events from 2017 to date..
  44. Some of the committee members had the opportunity to attend the NEC meetings..
  45. More members adhered to training event payments..
  46. THANKS AND APPRECIATIONS
  47. As outgoing Chairperson, I would like to take this opportunity to thank committee members who dedicated their time and effort to serve to the association and who ensured the effective flow of activities in their respective portfolios. It was a pleasure working with such an amazing and inspirational team for the duration of our two year term.
  48. I would also like to thank the SAOSWA members for their continuous support and cooperation throughout the past two years.
